Starmer fights for survival after Epstein fallout

Published on: February 6, 2026 9:15 PM

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces a severe political crisis after appointing Peter Mandelson as U.K. ambassador to the U.S. Mandelson had close ties to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The release of millions of Epstein-related documents has intensified scrutiny on Starmer’s judgment and leadership.

The controversy erupted when emails revealed Mandelson passed sensitive government information to Epstein in 2009. Starmer initially sacked Mandelson after earlier revelations in September 2025. Now, anger within the Labour Party and public criticism have put Starmer’s position at risk. Lawmakers question whether he can continue leading the government effectively.

Starmer has apologized to the public and Epstein’s victims for trusting Mandelson. Several senior Labour members have suggested he resign. Others remain uneasy, reflecting broader unease with Starmer’s decisions since the party’s 2024 landslide victory. Cabinet support will be crucial in determining his next steps.

If Starmer resigns, Labour could hold a leadership election to select a new prime minister. Potential candidates include Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Home Secretary Shabana Mahood, and former deputy PM Angela Rayner. Deputy PM David Lammy could serve as an interim leader if Starmer steps down immediately.

The coming weeks will test Starmer’s political skills and party unity. Upcoming elections and further document releases could worsen the crisis. Labour members face tough choices, and the prime minister’s future hangs in the balance.
