KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly was informed on Friday that the provincial government had taken strict measures against unfit vehicle, proceeding against 56,200 heavy vehicles and imposing fines totaling Rs820 million last year.

Speaking during Question Hour, Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon, who also oversees the transport department, said 2,935 dumpers, 2,138 oil tankers, 183 tractors, 13,918 trailers, 30,917 trucks, and 6,109 water tankers were challaned in the last year. He added that the issuance of vehicle fitness certificates has now been fully computerised, preventing unfit vehicles—including those from KP and Balochistan—from operating on Sindh roads without proper certification.

Memon also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance public transport, noting that 500 new buses had been approved, with some already at the port. Sindh government buses carry around 200,000 passengers daily, while ridership on the Green Line has risen from 50,000 to 85,000. He said the Orange and Green Lines had been integrated to eliminate double fares, and pink buses are now operating exclusively for women.
The minister detailed improvements in traffic management, including the installation of 12 new traffic signals across the city and the ongoing implementation of a smart city traffic system. He also confirmed the introduction of a free shuttle service for passengers following the relocation of the bus terminal and a free EV scooty scheme for women, which has already attracted 15,000 applicants.
In legislative business, the Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, proposing compulsory third-party liability motor insurance for vehicle registration and ownership transfers, was referred to the standing committee. The bill excludes two-wheelers and aims to provide accident compensation and insurance coverage for drivers.

The house also unanimously passed a resolution endorsing the 7th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Asia Regional Conference and the 2nd Joint CPA Asia & South-East Asia Regional Conference 2026, before adjourning until February 9.
