ISLAMABAD – The Senate on Friday witnessed a second consecutive day of loud protests by PTI senators, who demanded clarity on former prime minister Imran Khan’s health amid a wave of social media rumours. The government, however, assured the House that Mr Khan was in good health and dismissed the circulating claims as “false and baseless”.

PTI senators repeatedly chanted slogans, thumped their desks, and accused authorities of imposing a “complete blackout” on Mr Khan for weeks. They demanded immediate access for his family, doctors, and lawyers. The uproar overshadowed the day’s proceedings, prompting repeated calls for the government to provide a formal explanation.
PTI parliamentary leader Syed Ali Zafar warned that public anxiety had reached dangerous levels. He cautioned that the situation could escalate if the government did not issue a clear and immediate answer. Following his remarks, PTI senators staged a walkout, vowing not to return until a cabinet minister addressed the matter directly.
Regarding Imran Khan’s health and life, Indian and Afghan media circulated false news on social media. We have spoken to the superintendent of Adiala Jail on this matter. Imran Khan’s health is perfectly fine, and there is no threat to his life, says Federal Minister Tariq Fazal… pic.twitter.com/UVBoK3kq5Y

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry finally responded, saying Imran Khan was receiving all necessary facilities at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. He said reports about any threat to Mr Khan’s life originated from Afghan media and were later amplified by Indian outlets, calling them part of a “deliberate misinformation campaign”.
The opposition rejected the explanation, insisting that access to Mr Khan must be restored. Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani urged lawmakers to maintain order, reminding them that they “cannot threaten like this”. The session was briefly adjourned due to a lack of quorum before reopening to renewed PTI chants of “release Imran Khan”.

Despite the chaos, the government presented the Income Tax (Third Amendment) Bill, 2025, for Senate recommendations, as mandated by Article 73 of the Constitution. Later, protests resumed when PTI Senator Zeeshan Khanzada reiterated concerns over Mr Khan’s condition. With the environment too noisy for debate, the chair deferred the remaining agenda and adjourned the House until Monday at 4pm.
