ISLAMABAD: Senior MQM Pakistan leader and Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal stated on Thursday that Pakistan currently lacks a functional local government system. He said that after the 18th Amendment, all powers and funds are concentrated with the provincial chief ministers.
Mustafa Kamal noted that MQM had presented its draft during discussions on the 26th Amendment and had submitted it to JUI-F. He added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assured that MQM’s proposals will be incorporated into the upcoming 27th Constitutional Amendment.

MQM leaders Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Dr. Farooq Sattar said the 27th Amendment aims to promote good governance and enhance coordination among institutions. They emphasized that local governments should be recognized as legitimate constitutional entities and protected under the Constitution.
The MQM leaders highlighted that empowering local bodies is key to addressing public problems and ensuring that the benefits of democracy reach citizens. They stressed the role of the Supreme Court in overseeing and safeguarding local governance structures.

Mustafa Kamal concluded by reiterating the party’s commitment to ensuring local governments are strengthened, transparent, and able to function effectively for the welfare of the people.
