Infrastructural development in Punjab

Published on: November 5, 2025 1:56 AM

In the last two years, the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has worked with great dedication to improve the infrastructure of the province. Maryam Nawaz Sharif has proved herself to be a strong and active leader focused on the progress and welfare of the people. Despite many challenges, such as poverty, crime, protests, and limited resources, she has kept the development work moving forward at a fast pace. New roads, flyovers, and underpasses are being built, while many new development schemes are also being planned for the future.

During the financial year 2024-25, the Punjab Government repaired and rebuilt 1,214 damaged roads, covering 12,894 kilometers across the province. This huge effort has made traveling easier and safer for millions of people. In the current financial year 2025-26, work is underway to repair 257 roads with a total length of 590 kilometers. The government has allocated Rs. 125.95 billion for this purpose, and the Communication and Works Department (C&W) has already utilized 37% of the funds to complete much of the work.

Under the Chief Minister’s Road Restoration Program (RRP), the government aims to make all roads in Punjab free of potholes. A total of 462 roads covering 6,835 kilometers are included in this plan, with Rs. 133 billion allocated. So far, 376 roads have been completed, and the remaining 86 will be finished by December 2025. Another part of this program, called Road Rehabilitation Program-II, includes 72 more roads at a cost of Rs. 147 billion. Out of these, 31 roads are complete, and 41 are under construction.

One of the major projects under the Chief Minister’s leadership is the Quaid -e-Azam Interchange to Wagha Boarder Road, which will become a landmark in Punjab. This project will improve travel and promote tourism and business. Another key project is the dualization of the Faisalabad-Chiniot Road (24 km). So far, 19 kilometers of earthwork, 19 kilometers of sub-base, 18 kilometers of base course, and 12 kilometers of asphalt have been completed. According to a Minister for C&W Malik Shoaib Ahmad Bherth , this project will be completed by December 2025 and will help improve traffic flow between the two major industrial cities.

In South Punjab, the dualization of the Multan-Vehari Road (93 km) is a significant step forward. This project, worth Rs. 10 billion, will make travel faster and safer for people in the region and will also improve trade and business activity across three districts. Recently, the C&W Department has completed several projects in a short time, including the construction of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Adyala Road, Rawalpindi, an underpass at GPO Chowk and TM Chowk, and remodeling of Gali Chowk.

Other completed works include the dualization of Lillah Interchange (M-2) via Pind Dadan Khan to Jhelum (128 km), dualization of Sargodha-khusbab-Mianwali Road (60 km), flyovers at Shujabad and Sargodha, and dualization of Gujranwala to N-5 Interchange via Hafizabad (74 km). These development projects are not only improving the road network but also helping to grow trade, tourism, and economic opportunities in Punjab. The Punjab Government’s focus on fast and quality work demonstrates its strong commitment to progress and public service. With many new projects planned, the future of Punjab looks more connected, developed, and prosperous than ever before.
