DERA ISMAIL KHAN – A police officer was martyred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan district when a checkpoint in the Khati area came under attack from terrorists on Thursday, officials confirmed.
According to Regional Police Officer (RPO) Ashfaq Anwer, terrorists attacked the checkpoint from multiple directions. The checkpoint in-charge, Ahmed Nawaz, was critically injured during the assault and later embraced martyrdom.

The attack occurred on the same day that the Pakistan Army carried out an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the same district, during which a major of the Pakistan Army was martyred and seven terrorists were killed, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

In recent weeks, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has seen a rise in terror incidents — particularly targeting police and security forces — in areas such as Bannu, Peshawar, Karak, Lakki Marwat, and Bajaur.
Just last week, a soldier was martyred and another injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire near Bannu.

Experts link the spike in violence to the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022 and vowed to resume attacks on law enforcement agencies.
According to recent reports by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) and the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), KP remained the most terrorism-affected province last month, reporting 45 attacks that killed 54 people and injured 49 others.
