ICC suspends USA cricket over governance failures

Published on: September 24, 2025 10:08 PM

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket’s membership with immediate effect, citing repeated governance failures and reputational damage to the sport, though U.S. teams will still compete internationally.

In its statement, the ICC Board said USA Cricket breached obligations under its constitution by failing to establish a functional governance structure and by showing little progress toward achieving National Governing Body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. These ongoing issues prompted the ICC to take decisive action.

Despite the suspension, the United States men’s team will continue to participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled for February next year. The ICC will temporarily oversee team management to ensure preparations remain unaffected. This approach aims to protect athletes while reforms are pursued.

The ICC also referenced “significant actions” by USA Cricket that damaged cricket’s reputation both in the United States and globally. Although specific details were not disclosed, officials described the suspension as a necessary measure to safeguard the sport’s future and maintain credibility worldwide.

USA Cricket had previously been warned during the 2024 ICC annual general meeting for non-compliance with membership criteria. It was given 12 months to implement reforms but failed to meet those requirements. The organization’s suspension now serves as a reminder of the ICC’s zero-tolerance approach to governance failures.

Notably, the U.S. team’s historic performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they reached the Super Eight stage and secured a spot in the 2026 tournament, remains unaffected. The ICC emphasized its commitment to ensuring that players and fans are not penalized due to administrative shortcomings.
