Controversial referee returns for high-stakes Pakistan-India clash

Published on: September 20, 2025 4:26 PM

Controversial match referee Andy Pycroft has once again been appointed for the much-anticipated Pakistan vs India clash scheduled for Sunday. This decision has reignited tensions, as Pycroft was at the center of controversy during the last encounter between the two teams in the Asia Cup.

Pakistan has responded by canceling its pre-match press conference and hiring a motivational speaker to mentally prepare the squad. The match is part of the Asia Cup Super Four stage and will be played in Dubai at 7:30 PM (Pakistan time). Pakistan is expected to make one or two changes to its lineup.

India remains undefeated in the tournament, while Pakistan’s only loss came at the hands of India. In preparation for the rematch, head coach Mike Hesson and captain Salman Ali Agha held a crucial team meeting. Pakistan’s batsmen admitted their past failures and have pledged to improve by focusing on strike rotation and reducing dot balls.

Tensions surrounding Pycroft stem from the September 14 match, where he allegedly acted on BCCI instructions to stop Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav from shaking hands with Pakistan’s captain after the game. India’s team refused to engage in post-match handshakes, prompting Pakistan to boycott the presentation ceremony. In response, the PCB demanded Pycroft’s removal from the tournament.

The ICC replied, stating Pycroft had little to no role in the “no handshake” controversy. Dissatisfied with this response, the PCB sent another formal complaint, warning of a possible boycott of the Asia Cup if action wasn’t taken. Despite the protest, Pycroft has now been reappointed, setting the stage for another heated encounter—both on and off the field.
