Australia’s fast bowler Mitchell Starc has retired from Twenty20 internationals just six months before the World Cup. The 35-year-old left-armer wants to focus on extending his career in Test and One-Day cricket. Starc is Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is with 79 wickets from 65 matches.
Starc said Test cricket has always been his top priority. He cherished playing T20 cricket, especially winning the 2021 T20 World Cup with Australia. Now, he aims to stay fresh and fit for upcoming major events like the Ashes and the 2027 ODI World Cup. His retirement also gives the team time to prepare for the next T20 World Cup.
Selectors chairman George Bailey called Starc hard to replace due to his skill with the new ball and death overs bowling. Bailey added that the team is grooming young bowlers like Nathan Ellis and Ben Dwarshuis to fill key roles. Starc’s swing bowling and excellent fielding made him a crucial player for Australia.
Starc played a key role in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup win, taking nine wickets in seven matches. His retirement marks another step in the winding down of Australia’s golden cricket generation. Other stars like David Warner and Steve Smith have recently retired from limited-overs cricket as well.
Cricket Australia praised Starc for his dedication and team-first attitude. CEO Todd Greenberg said Starc made sacrifices to ensure younger players get opportunities. Starc’s decision reflects his focus on helping Australia succeed in Tests and ODIs in the coming years.
