The Global Water Organization (GWO) has officially launched its operations from its headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Pakistan is among the founding members, having signed the organization’s charter.
Federal Minister for Water Resources, Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo, represented Pakistan at the inaugural ceremony on May 28, following an invitation from Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Abdulrahman Al-Fadley.
The GWO was established under the leadership of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Its goal is to promote international cooperation to tackle rising pressure on global water systems. Other founding nations include Kuwait, Qatar, Spain, Greece, Senegal, and Mauritania.
According to a statement by Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), the GWO’s launch marks a major milestone in addressing global water challenges. The charter emphasizes joint efforts for sustainable resource management and climate resilience, especially in dry and water-scarce regions.
Pakistan signed the charter along with other member countries and also offered to host a regional GWO office in Pakistan. The move aligns with Pakistan’s commitment to improving water security and fostering international cooperation on water-related issues.
The GWO aims to work with non-member states, UN bodies, financial institutions, and other stakeholders to ensure access to clean water and sanitation. The charter highlights the need for a united strategy to protect water resources for future generations, amid growing climate pressures worldwide.
