Former prime minister and senior leader of Pakistan People’s Party Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Saturday said that Pakistan should tell America that Afghan peace process was linked to peace in Kashmir. Peace in Afghanistan could not be achieved without the cooperation of Pakistan, he said while talking to reporters at his residence. Gilani said that US President Donald Trump had claimed that all the issues in Afghanistan would be resolved soon. “America cannot simply deny the contributions and efforts of Pakistan in the ongoing Afghan peace process,” said Gilani. “If I were the prime minister of Pakistan this time, I would have convinced Trump by mentioning the sacrifices of Pakistan in the war on terror. We have lost 70,000 innocent civilians and 10,000 soldiers in this war,” said Gilani. He said that if America wanted Pakistan to fight on two fronts, it should link peace in Kashmir to peace in Afghanistan. He said that Pakistan as a frontline state not only sacrificed human lives but was also crushed down economically. “I am not against peace in Afghanistan, as among all the capitals of the world, Kabul is closer to my heart,” said Gilani. “We (Pakistanis and Afghans) are like brothers in terms of neighbourhood, religion and culture,” he added. He further said that many a forces had come to and then left Afghanistan, as history had witnessed, but “we as neighbours shall live together for the rest of our lives”. He said a peaceful, prosperous, sovereign and independent Afghanistan is in the best interest of Pakistan; anything that “happens in Afghanistan directly effects Pakistan and vice versa”. He said the Kashmir issue was not a new one; it was the unfinished agenda of the British. He said the United Nations Security Council should take notice of the issue as Kashmir was a disputed territory. “Why all the human rights organisations are silent now… when will they speak up?” said Gilani. He also criticised the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for its silence on the Kashmir issue. “The OIC should condemn the gross human rights violations by Indian forces in Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir. We should set aside all the differences and stand by our Muslim brethren in this hour of need,” said Gilani. All the Muslim countries should extend their moral, cultural, humanitarian and diplomatic support to Kashmiri people, he added.
