The Sindh High Court (SHC), on Wednesday, directed the trial court to proceed with the Chakra Goth case on daily basis and submit a detailed investigation report by March 6. The case was in reference to an attack on a bus of police officers in Korangi’s Chakra Goth on August 19, 2011, which had claimed seven lives; injuring several others. The two-member bench dismissed bail petitions submitted by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) activist, Gul Muhammad, and others. The defending counsel argued that the government was using delaying tactics in the case. The bench was asked to consider this as a humanitarian issue as innocent people were behind bars due to prosecution delays despite court directions to resolve the case within three months. To which, the court observed that all accused call themselves innocent. The state prosecutor asserted that these witnesses were being produced on court orders and the police had arrested another accused in the case. The prosecution also wanted to rapidly conclude the case, he added. The SHC had earlier expressed anger at the slow progress by the prosecution and also asked for the Sindh police chief to report in this regard. Published in Daily Times, February 21st 2019.
