Sir: While the UN celebrates its founding day on October 24, 2018, let it refresh its resolutions granting right to self-determination to inhabitants of Kashmiris, a simmering cauldron. It could flare up into a nuclear Armageddon between two next-door neighbours. Our contribution to peace keeping, the third largest, is in line with our founding father’s desire: “Pakistan will never be found lacking in extending its material and moral support to the oppressed and suppressed peoples of the world and in upholding the principles of United Nations Charter.” (Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, February 1948). We contributed to UN peacekeeping missions in Congo, New Guinea, West Irian, Namibia, Western Sahara, Cambodia, Somalia, Bosnia, Haiti, Georgia, Rwanda, Angola, East Timor, Sierra Leone Liberia, Kosovo Liberia, Burundi, and Iraq-Kuwait Observer Mission. And will continue to do so. But, let UN not forget war prevention is as important as peace keeping. Kashmir is a veritable inferno. DEEBA MALIK Rawalpindi Published in Daily Times, October 16th 2018.
