Awami Rickshaw Union (ARU) Pakistan has refused to accept the minor decrease in petrol price of 4.26 per litre from the caretaker government, terming this reduction as a cumin seed in a camel’s mouth. They demanded the government further reduce petrol’s price to Rs 75 per litre and warned that if the government did not accept their demand in the next 24 hours, they will announce a Rickshaw Jalao Tehreek across the country. These views were expressed by angry protestors, while carrying out a massive rally against inflation in Pakistan from Thokar Niaz Baig to Kalma Chowk. They appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice on this cruel increase in petroleum products. A large number of rickshaw drivers from different areas of the metropolis, along with Jamaat-e-Islami Spokesperson Ameerul Azeem, ARU Pakistan Chairman Majeed Ghauri, Sajjad Butt, Hafiz Mazhar Jilani and people from different walks of life people participated. While addressing the protestors, Majeed Ghauri criticised the political parties for not joining their rally on inflation despite being invited. He said that now, the poor people will have to get out from their homes for getting their own rights, adding that candidates are going door to door asking for votes in the 2018 elections, but they are not ready to raise voice and to stand for social issues. He said that political parties’ candidates never pay heed to people’s problems when they are in power, so how can anyone expect anything good from them. Published in Daily Times, July 9th 2018.
