Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court has sought help from clerics over the matter pertaining to the Finality of Prophethood clause in the Elections Act of 2017. Dr Hassan Madni, Mohsin Naqvi, Sajid-ur-Rehman and Mufti Hussain Binnori have been summoned in the court on next Monday. On Wednesday, when Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui commenced the hearing of the case, he was informed that the petitioner was not available in the court. On his inquiry about the petitioner’s whereabouts, he was requested by the petitioner’s counsel to grant a day for his client to appear in the court. On this, the hearing was adjourned till 1130am on Thursday (today). The government had submitted in the court a report prepared by the inquiry committee led by Raja Zafarul Haq on Tuesday after Justice Siddiqui set a 1pm deadline for submission, telling deputy attorney general (DAG) Arshad Mehmood Kayani that contempt proceedings would be initiated against the prime minister and other officials in case the report was not submitted in time. On receiving the report, Justice Siddiqui said that it should remain sealed till a final verdict was announced by the court in the matter, directing the petitioner to present arguments on a daily basis. Since November, the court had been repeatedly directing the federal government to submit the report. “In case of non-compliance, the court would be constrained to issue contempt notices to all the delinquents and the prime minister would be called in person,” Justice Siddiqui had said, adding, “Let the heaven fall, there is nothing important than this issue.” Published in Daily Times, February 22nd 2018.
