ISLAMABAD: Body of a tribesman, Nazr Jan Mehsud, was brought on Thursday to Tank. He had been killed an alleged police encounter in Karachi along with other people, including Naqeeb Mehsud. When contacted, a number of tribesmen in Karachi said Nazr had been killed in the same encounter in which Naqeeb Mehsud was killed on January 13. “The body of Nazr was lying in Chhipa Center for weeks because he could not be identified. Later, his CNIC had to be sent to South Waziristan which took almost two weeks to be confirmed from his relatives,” one tribesman said. Three days ago, the relatives of the deceased arrived in Karachi and collected his dead body. Sikandar Hayat said that around 5,000 to 7,000 people had attended the funeral prayers in Tank while his dead body has later been shifted to Waziristan for burial. Haitam Jan, father of the deceased, told media that his son had left for Karachi some 14 months ago, but went missing 12 months before. “Since I am not an educated man, I went to Karachi to locate my son, but I had to come back without any clue. Just yesterday, my co-villagers told me that my son has been killed in police encounter,” Jan recalled. He said his son was a helper on a loader, the heavy machinery, to learn driving and he had nothing with militancy. On his Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC), the deceased’s date of birth is January 1, 1992, and belonged to Shaktoi area, Tehsil Laddha, of South Waziristan. The Grand Tribal Jirga in Karachi has started a sit-in to get justice for Naqeebullah Mehsud— the Waziristan man killed on January 13 in Karachi in a staged police encounter. The jirga has compiled a report, bearing the names of around 66 people whom they believe are being kept in police lockups in Karachi. Rehmat Khan, a retired additional IG, said the list would be handed over to the police investigation committee. “We (the grand tribal jirga) have held meetings with Sindh IG AD Khwaja and Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair to inform them of our reservations and injustices meted out to our community in Sindh,” he added. During the course of meeting with IG, he said that members of the jirga had reiterated their unwavering confidence on the police team investigating Naqeeb Mehsud killing case. However, he said the jirga had asked the governor that being a representative of central government, he should help form a judicial commission to probe all incidents including the fake police encounters in which scores of Pashtun and Mehsud tribesmen had been killed. “This trend and attitude toward a particular tribe should now stop,” he said.
