KARACHI: Scores of workers took to streets in protests on Sunday to mark the fourth anniversary of 2013 Rana Plaza, Dhaka, tragedy, demanding health and safety at their workplaces. More than 1,000 workers were killed, twice as many were wounded as eight-storey Rana Plaza housing garments manufacturing units collapsed in Dhaka Bangladesh on April 24, 2013. The rally was organized by the National Trade Union Federation and workers from different industries as well as families of Baldia factory fire victims attended it in an expression of solidarity. They marched from Fawara Chowk to Karachi Press Club, holding placards and chanting slogans for workers rights. While addressing the rally, NTUF president Rafiq Baloch said that despite seeing worst industrial disasters, neither the employers nor the authorities have apparently learned any lesson. “The casualties are still occurring at the workplaces due to the lack of health and safety measures. And the worst example of it is of Gadani ship-breaking yard,” he remarked. He told that the labor rights exploitation was at its peak in the garments factories due to a collusion of employers, international brands, government and social auditing firms. He added that the workers were not given job letters nor were they registered with the social security institutions and pension funds. And due to lack of safety measures, he said, disasters happened. Baloch maintained that the whole notorious cult of employers, government institutions and others was also exploiting the International Labor Organization’s conventions and GSP Plus status.
