
At least three people lost their lives after a vehicle carrying Afghan families returning home was swept away by flash floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Khyber district on Monday, as heavy monsoon rains continued to trigger emergencies across northern Pakistan.

According to Rescue 1122, the vehicle was caught in powerful floodwaters near Sultan Khel Market in Landi Kotal tehsil. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched, launching a large-scale search operation with the assistance of local residents.
Rescue officials confirmed that the bodies of a man and a woman were recovered from Jamrud by Rescue 1122 divers, while the body of a child was found in the Parang Sang area. The search for other missing passengers was still ongoing at the time of reporting. During the operation, rescuers also recovered the body of another man, later identified as a resident of Jamrud.
The tragedy comes as the Pakistan Meteorological Department had already warned of widespread rainfall across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa between July 19 and July 23, prompting authorities to place emergency services on high alert.
Separately, heavy rains caused the roof of a room to collapse in Kalu Dheri village in Mardan, killing two children and injuring their mother and 14-year-old sister. The injured were shifted to Mardan Medical Complex Hospital for treatment.
Rescue 1122 has deployed water rescue teams, emergency vehicles, rescue boats and specialised equipment across the province to respond to weather-related incidents. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from rivers, streams and flood-prone areas, and immediately contact emergency services in case of danger.

Heavy rainfall also caused widespread damage in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where houses, shops, roads, bridges and public infrastructure were affected. Relief operations are underway as officials continue to monitor the evolving weather situation and assess losses caused by the ongoing monsoon spell.
