According to FIA officials, the special unit was created on the directives of the FIA director general to strengthen investigations into suspicious cryptocurrency transactions and address emerging challenges linked to digital financial systems.

The newly formed unit will monitor suspicious financial activities conducted through cryptocurrencies and investigate cases involving illegal transfers, cybercrime, financial fraud and other forms of digital currency misuse.

Officials said the unit would use modern technology and follow international investigation standards to trace cryptocurrency-related crimes. The initiative aims to improve Pakistan’s capacity to detect, investigate and take legal action against individuals and networks involved in financial crimes through digital assets.

Cryptocurrencies have gained global attention in recent years due to their increasing use in online transactions, but authorities worldwide have also raised concerns over their potential misuse for illicit activities, including money laundering, fraud and financing of criminal networks.

The FIA’s latest move is part of broader efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s financial security framework and improve coordination in combating technology-driven crimes. Investigators in the new unit are expected to develop expertise in blockchain analysis, digital asset tracking and cyber investigations.

Officials emphasized that the establishment of the unit does not target legitimate cryptocurrency users but focuses on preventing illegal activities and ensuring transparency in digital financial transactions.

The rise of cryptocurrency-related crimes has encouraged law enforcement agencies across the world to create specialized teams capable of handling complex cases involving blockchain technology and digital assets.

With the creation of the Crypto Currency Investigation Unit, the FIA aims to enhance its ability to respond to evolving financial threats and ensure that digital platforms are not exploited by criminal groups.
