
A school in New York has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered humanoid robot as a teaching assistant to support classroom learning in advanced technology subjects. The robot, which costs about $57,600, will initially help teachers deliver lessons in coding, robotics, and artificial intelligence to Year 12 and Year 13 students. School officials stressed that the technology is designed to enhance learning rather than replace human teachers.

The robot has a human-like appearance, featuring artificial skin, long brown hair, and movable hands that allow it to interact naturally with students. However, it cannot walk because its legs remain fixed in one position. Despite its limited mobility, the robot is expected to assist with classroom activities by encouraging discussion and supporting practical learning during technology lessons.
According to the school administration, the robot has been programmed to promote independent thinking instead of simply providing direct answers to students. Teachers believe this approach will help pupils strengthen their problem-solving skills while increasing their interest in emerging technologies. The initiative is also intended to prepare students for future careers in rapidly developing fields such as artificial intelligence and robotics.

School officials also highlighted several privacy measures built into the system. The robot operates without an internet connection and does not collect students’ personal information or record voice or video during classroom sessions. These safeguards have been introduced to protect student privacy while allowing teachers to use the technology safely within the learning environment.
Although the project has attracted criticism on social media, school leaders maintain that human teachers will remain at the centre of education. They emphasised that the robot will only serve as an additional classroom assistant, supporting lessons without replacing the essential role of teachers or reducing the importance of direct interaction between educators and students.
