Trump’s health draws renewed scrutiny after primetime address

US President Donald Trump’s health has come under renewed public scrutiny following his primetime address, with visible bruising on his hands prompting fresh political debate ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

During the 27-minute speech from the White House’s East Room, the 80-year-old president was seen gripping the lectern, with what appeared to be foundation makeup covering bruises on the backs of both hands. Images from the address quickly circulated online, leading to speculation about his health.

The White House dismissed the concerns, saying the bruising was the result of Trump’s frequent interactions with members of the public.

“The President is a man of the people, and he meets more Americans and shakes their hands on a daily basis than any other president in history,” a White House spokesperson said.

Trump remained standing throughout the address, avoiding attention to previously observed swelling around his ankles, another issue that has generated discussion in recent months.

The president has repeatedly insisted he remains in good health, pointing to recent medical examinations at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He has also highlighted his performance on cognitive assessments, saying he has taken the tests three times and “aced them all.”

Despite those assurances, political opponents have continued to question his fitness to complete his term, while some Republican supporters have also expressed concern over his appearance during recent public events.

Online discussion intensified after users shared videos and photographs alleging changes in Trump’s speech and movement, although no official medical update has suggested a serious health condition.

Health has increasingly become a campaign issue in US politics, particularly for older candidates seeking high office. Both Democrats and Republicans have faced scrutiny over the age and physical condition of senior political leaders in recent election cycles.

As campaigning for the 2026 midterm elections accelerates, Trump’s health is expected to remain a closely watched topic, with the White House continuing to reject speculation about any underlying medical problems.
