PMD warns of severe heatstroke risk

Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for several cities, warning of a high risk of heatstroke. Dangerous heat index levels have been recorded across multiple regions. Authorities have urged the public to take precautionary measures.

According to the PMD, temperatures reached between 40°C and 42°C in Peshawar, Quetta, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ismail Khan, and Joharabad. However, the heat index in these cities exceeded 54°C, significantly increasing health risks.

Sargodha recorded a temperature of 40.5°C, while the heat index climbed to 52.8°C. Meanwhile, Gujranwala and Kot Addu experienced a heat index of 52.5°C. Okara reported a temperature of 40.5°C with a heat index of 51.5°C.

Additionally, Attock recorded a temperature of 38°C and a perceived temperature of 49.8°C. Islamabad registered 38°C, while the heat index reached 49.2°C. Faisalabad recorded 40°C with a heat index of 48.3°C.

In Sialkot, the temperature remained at 36°C with humidity reaching 58 percent. Hyderabad recorded 38°C with a heat index of 45.9°C. Karachi reported a comparatively lower temperature of 33°C, although the heat index reached 38.1°C.

The PMD warned that elevated heat index levels could significantly increase the risk of heatstroke and heat-related illnesses. Therefore, citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and follow official safety guidelines.

The department also urged relevant authorities to remain vigilant and implement preventive measures during the ongoing hot weather. Weather officials will continue monitoring conditions and issue further advisories if extreme temperatures persist.
