Strait of Hormuz tensions deepen amid US-Iran conflict

Published on: July 13, 2026 9:44 AM

Strait of Hormuz grinds to a halt as Iran strikes rattle global energy markets | Fox News

Tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified after both countries asserted authority over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, following a new wave of military strikes and maritime incidents that have raised concerns about regional stability and global energy security.

According to international reports, the latest escalation followed an attack on a commercial container vessel near the coast of Oman, prompting fresh military action by the United States. US Central Command said its forces targeted multiple military sites in Iran, including air defence systems, radar installations, missile and drone facilities, and small naval vessels. Washington maintained that the Strait of Hormuz remains an international waterway and rejected any claim that Iran controls the passage.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard responded by asserting that the strait falls within Iran’s territory and vowed to resist what it described as foreign interference. Iranian authorities also reported explosions at several locations inside the country, while state media confirmed casualties following the latest strikes.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically significant maritime routes, serving as a major corridor for global oil and natural gas shipments. Any disruption to shipping through the waterway has the potential to affect international energy markets, although oil prices have eased from earlier highs despite continued uncertainty.

The latest developments have also complicated diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving a temporary ceasefire and reaching a broader agreement between Washington and Tehran. Regional mediators, including Pakistan, Qatar and Egypt, continue to encourage dialogue and de-escalation to prevent further conflict.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that a return to full-scale hostilities could have severe consequences for regional and international security. Meanwhile, both sides continue to exchange statements over navigation rights, military operations and the future of the vital shipping route.

Analysts say sustained diplomatic engagement will be essential to reduce tensions, protect commercial shipping and ensure the uninterrupted flow of energy supplies through one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.
