The Pakistan Peoples Party has nominated Advocate Amjad Hussain for the position of chief minister in Gilgit-Baltistan following its strong performance in the recently concluded regional elections. The decision signals the party’s intention to take the lead in forming the next government in the strategically important region.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari personally informed Amjad Hussain of the decision and discussed priorities for the incoming administration. During the conversation, he reportedly emphasized the need to safeguard the constitutional, political, and economic rights of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan while ensuring inclusive development.
Amjad Hussain secured victory from the GBA-1 Gilgit constituency and emerged as one of the party’s prominent leaders in the region. His nomination comes at a time when political parties are actively negotiating alliances and finalizing arrangements for the formation of the new provincial government.
According to the officially announced results from 21 of the 24 constituencies, the PPP won nine seats and emerged as the largest party in the assembly. The PML-N secured six seats, while the IPP won four seats, MWM claimed one seat, and one independent candidate also succeeded.
Meanwhile, the PPP and PML-N have reached an understanding to jointly form the government in Gilgit-Baltistan. Leaders from both parties held extensive consultations with regional leadership and organizational representatives before agreeing on a framework designed to ensure political stability and effective governance.
The two parties have expressed confidence in moving forward through cooperation, mutual trust, and consensus. Their agreement is expected to strengthen the government formation process and provide a stable political platform for addressing development priorities and public concerns across Gilgit-Baltistan.
