Bollywood’s work-life balance debate takes centre stage

Published on: June 2, 2026 3:30 PM

MUMBAI: Bollywood’s long-standing culture of demanding work schedules has come under renewed scrutiny as actors and filmmakers debate calls to limit shooting shifts and promote a healthier work-life balance across the industry.

The discussion gained momentum after reports that leading actress Deepika Padukone stepped away from a major film project over a request for reduced working hours following motherhood. The development reignited conversations about working conditions in India’s film industry, where shoots often extend well beyond conventional working hours.

Traditionally, Bollywood productions have operated on schedules ranging from 12 to 18 hours a day, with some projects requiring even longer shifts. However, a growing number of actors and industry professionals are now advocating for more sustainable work practices.

Several prominent actors, including Suniel Shetty, Kajol and Ram Kapoor, have voiced support for allowing performers to set reasonable boundaries. Kapoor argued that established stars should have the freedom to choose their working hours after achieving success in the industry.

Others believe strict limits may be difficult to implement due to the unpredictable nature of filmmaking. Actor Ali Fazal and actress Chitrangda Singh noted that factors such as weather conditions, technical challenges and complex action sequences often require flexibility on set.

Industry representatives also highlighted the financial pressures associated with large-scale productions, where delays can significantly increase costs. However, critics argue that long working hours often stem from poor planning and place unnecessary strain on actors, technicians and support staff.

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur stressed that discussions about work-life balance should extend beyond celebrities and include all members of a production team. He called for equal consideration of the welfare of technicians, crew members and junior artistes.

The debate has also exposed disparities within the industry, where established stars possess greater bargaining power than many workers behind the scenes. While opinions remain divided, the conversation reflects changing attitudes toward workplace wellbeing and signals a broader shift in how Bollywood views professional and personal balance.
