The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued its latest monsoon outlook for the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalayan mountain ranges, warning that above-normal temperatures combined with seasonal rainfall could increase the risk of flooding and other weather-related hazards in northern Pakistan.
According to the PMD, rainfall in the northern regions is expected to remain close to seasonal averages during the ongoing monsoon period. Areas including Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to receive normal monsoon rainfall.
However, the department cautioned that temperatures across the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalayan ranges are expected to remain higher than usual. The warmer conditions may accelerate the melting of glaciers and snow, increasing water flows in rivers and streams and raising the possibility of flash floods in vulnerable areas.

The PMD also warned that heavy rainfall could trigger landslides and mudslides in mountainous regions, disrupting transportation and posing risks to residents and tourists. In addition, there is a possibility of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in high-altitude and environmentally sensitive locations, where glacial lakes may overflow or burst due to rising temperatures.
Authorities have advised local administrations to remain vigilant and ensure preparedness for any emergency situation arising from changing weather conditions. Residents living near rivers, streams and flood-prone areas have also been urged to stay alert, closely monitor official weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
The meteorological department emphasized that changing climate patterns continue to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, making precautionary measures more important than ever. Citizens, tourists and local authorities are encouraged to cooperate with disaster management agencies and follow safety instructions to minimize the impact of potential floods, landslides and other natural hazards during the monsoon season.
