Two police men lost their lives after dumper rammed into police van on M9

2 cops martyred as speeding dumper collides with parked police van on M9 Motorway - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

Two police officials lost their lives on Monday after a speeding dumper truck rammed into a parked police van on the M9 Motorway near Karachi, officials confirmed.

The incident took place within the jurisdiction of Gadap City police station, where a police mobile was stationed on the roadside for routine patrolling and snap checking. According to police, the dumper was travelling from Hyderabad to Karachi when it crashed into the parked vehicle with significant force.

As a result of the collision, Sub-Inspector Sahib Dad Solangi and Constable Wajid were killed on the spot. A spokesperson for Malir police stated that both officers were performing official duties at the time of the accident.

Authorities said the dumper driver was immediately taken into custody following the incident. Legal proceedings have also been initiated, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.

Motorway police also confirmed the deaths, saying initial findings suggest the dumper struck the police van while it was parked on the side of the motorway.

The tragic incident once again highlights the growing concerns over road safety and reckless driving involving heavy vehicles in Karachi and surrounding areas. Accidents involving dumpers, water tankers, and oil tankers have become increasingly common in recent months, raising questions about enforcement of traffic regulations and vehicle monitoring.

Earlier this year, on February 13, another serious accident occurred on the same M9 Motorway when an oil tanker collided with a passenger bus, leaving 12 people dead and six others injured.

Official figures indicate that traffic accidents remain a major public safety issue in Karachi. Hospital data from 2024 showed that nearly 500 people were killed and 4,879 injured in road crashes across the city, many linked to speeding, negligence, and the growing movement of heavy construction vehicles.

Police officials have urged stricter monitoring of heavy transport vehicles to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
