Ahsan Iqbal links regional role to national strength

Published on: May 9, 2026 3:30 PM

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has said Pakistan’s growing relevance in regional affairs is closely connected to its recent strategic and diplomatic positioning, stressing that long-term national progress now depends on economic strength and development.

Addressing an event at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Lahore, the minister said Pakistan’s role during recent regional tensions, including the United States-Iran conflict, was influenced by what he described as the country’s success in safeguarding its national interests.

Ahsan Iqbal stated that while national unity and resilience had helped Pakistan navigate security challenges, the country must now shift equal focus toward economic growth and institutional stability.

He warned that without progress on the development front, Pakistan could struggle to sustain its broader strategic gains in the future.

“National security and economic security are deeply linked,” he said, adding that addressing public issues and improving governance should remain top priorities.

The minister emphasised that a strong economy was essential for ensuring long-term stability, competitiveness, and national confidence. He noted that patriotism and sacrifice had strengthened the country in difficult moments, but sustainable prosperity required a similar commitment to development and reform.

Referring to Pakistan’s recent regional standing, he said the country had earned greater international attention and recognition, which created an opportunity to strengthen its diplomatic and economic footprint.

Ahsan Iqbal urged collective efforts to advance what he described as a “development mission”, saying public institutions, businesses, and citizens all had a role to play in building a stronger national future.

His remarks come at a time when Pakistan is facing inflationary pressure, energy challenges, and broader economic constraints, while also seeking to maintain an active diplomatic role in regional matters.

The minister concluded by saying Pakistan’s next major challenge was not only to defend national interests but also to translate strategic gains into lasting economic progress.
