Pakistan Demands Clarification from India on Chenab Water Reduction

Published on: May 5, 2026 12:58 AM

Chenab Water

Pakistan seeks India explanation after a significant drop in water flow in the Chenab Water. Authorities raised concerns over possible treaty violations. The Pakistan Seeks move highlights rising tensions over water-sharing issues under the Indus Waters framework.

Officials from the Ministry of Water Resources Pakistan reported a sharp decrease in water inflow at the Marala headworks. They said the reduction does not match the terms of the Indus Waters Treaty. Therefore, Pakistan questioned the sudden change in flow levels.

Furthermore, the ministry stated that India may have violated the Indus Waters Treaty. This treaty governs the distribution of river waters between the two countries. As a result, Pakistan demanded immediate clarification from Indian authorities.

In response, the Indus Waters Commission Pakistan instructed its officials to contact their Indian counterparts. They requested detailed information regarding the reduced water flow. Moreover, they emphasized the need for transparency in managing shared water resources.

Meanwhile, experts noted that any disruption in river flow could impact agriculture and water supply. The Chenab River is a key source for irrigation in Pakistan. Therefore, even minor changes in water levels can create serious concerns for farmers.

Overall, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Pakistan insists on strict compliance with treaty obligations. Hence, Pakistan Seeks India explanation remains a key diplomatic step to ensure fair and legal Chenab Water distribution under international agreements.
