Muslim man critically injured in suspected hate attack in Utah

Published on: July 15, 2026 1:32 PM

A Muslim man remains in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times in what authorities believe was a religion-motivated attack at a shopping mall in West Valley City, Utah.

According to police, the incident took place inside Valley Fair Mall, where the victim was working at a kiosk. Investigators said the suspect approached the man, asked for his name and religion, and then allegedly launched a violent knife attack.

Court documents identify the suspect as Peter Michael Larsen, 48. Police said Larsen allegedly admitted he targeted the victim because he was Muslim and claimed he intended to kill Muslims. Investigators described him as posing a significant threat to public safety due to his alleged violent actions and extremist views.

Bystanders quickly intervened, restraining the suspect until police officers arrived at the scene. Authorities said the victim suffered multiple stab wounds across his body and was bleeding heavily before being transported to a nearby hospital. He remains in critical condition. Reports citing family representatives and community leaders said the victim was stabbed approximately 15 times and has undergone multiple surgeries.

The suspect was also taken to hospital after sustaining injuries while being subdued by members of the public. He was later booked into the Salt Lake County Jail as authorities investigate charges of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct.

The attack has drawn condemnation from Muslim advocacy organisations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which called for a full investigation and justice for the victim.

Civil rights groups have continued to raise concerns about the rise in anti-Muslim hate incidents across the United States. Advocates say factors such as religious intolerance, extremism, anti-immigration sentiment and tensions linked to international conflicts have contributed to an increase in hate crimes targeting Muslim communities.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses as legal proceedings move forward.
