France head coach Didier Deschamps admitted his team was comprehensively outplayed after a 2-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup semi-final, ending Les Bleus’ hopes of reaching a third consecutive final.

Speaking after the match in Arlington, Texas, Deschamps acknowledged that Spain were superior in every department, saying France failed to match their opponents technically, tactically and physically.
“Spain are a very strong team, and they proved it tonight,” Deschamps told reporters. “We were below our usual level, made too many technical mistakes and were not at our best physically.”
France entered the semi-final as one of the tournament favourites, boasting an attack led by captain Kylian Mbappe alongside Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise. However, Spain dominated possession, controlled midfield and successfully limited France’s attacking opportunities throughout the match.
Deschamps credited Spain for disrupting his side’s rhythm by intercepting passes and closing down space, while also pointing to the early booking of Adrien Rabiot and the injury to defender William Saliba as setbacks.
Despite the disappointment, the French coach praised his players’ overall World Cup campaign and urged them to learn from the defeat before preparing for the third-place playoff.
Mbappe also expressed his frustration after the match, describing the result as a “huge disappointment.” The France captain admitted his team failed to execute its tactical plan and struggled to compete in midfield, where Spain consistently outnumbered the French players.
“Our goal was to press them high and stop them controlling the game, but we couldn’t do it,” Mbappe said, adding that Spain’s midfield dominance proved decisive.

The Real Madrid forward said the squad would reflect on the defeat before moving forward, stressing that football demands resilience after setbacks.
France will now face either England or Argentina in the third-place playoff, while Spain advance to the World Cup final with hopes of lifting another global title.
