Earth Day is observed globally on April 22 each year to raise awareness about environmental protection and the survival of life on the planet. The day highlights humanity’s responsibility toward Earth while emphasizing sustainable practices amid growing concerns over pollution, climate change, and environmental degradation across the world.
This year’s observance carries the theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” encouraging individuals and nations to take action for environmental protection. As global challenges intensify, scientists continue exploring space through missions like Artemis II mission, which aims to advance human understanding beyond Earth while reinforcing the importance of protecting our home planet.

The origins of Earth Day trace back to the 1960s, when rising industrial pollution began raising public concern across the United States. Influential environmental awareness grew after the publication of Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring, which revealed the dangers of environmental damage and inspired widespread debate on ecological responsibility.
The movement gained momentum after a major oil spill off the coast of California in 1969, which caused extensive environmental destruction. Following this incident, US Senator Gaylord Nelson launched the idea of a national environmental “teach-in” to educate the public and mobilize support for environmental protection efforts.

Nelson worked alongside activist Denis Hayes to organize events across the country, which eventually led to the first official Earth Day in 1970. The initiative successfully united students, activists and communities, creating one of the largest environmental movements in history and setting the foundation for global environmental awareness.
The date of April 22 was chosen strategically to maximize student participation, as it falls between spring break and final exams in many US academic institutions. Organizers believed this timing would ensure maximum engagement from young people, helping the environmental message spread widely and gain long-term momentum.
