Zardari urges nation to plant trees, reduce plastic waste on World Earth Day

Published on: April 22, 2026 9:35 AM

President Asif Ali Zardari on World Earth Day urged the nation to pledge to plant more trees, reduce plastic waste, adopt sustainable practices and educate youth about importance of environmental conservation.

The president, in his message on Earth Day celebrated across the world on April 22nd, said a cleaner and greener Pakistan is not only a necessity “but a duty we owe to our upcoming generations”.

He said “the day serves as a vital reminder of our collective responsibility to protect our planet and preserve its natural resources for future generations.”

Pakistan, he said is acutely aware of the environmental challenges it face, from the impacts of climate change to the degradation of its natural ecosystems and from flash floods to landslides. “As a nation, we have witnessed the devastating consequences of floods, droughts and extreme weather events. These are not distant threats but present realities that affect the lives and livelihoods of our people,” he added.

The president underlined that his vision for Pakistan has always been rooted in the principles of sustainable development and environmental stewardship. During his previous tenure, initiatives such as the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Youth Development Programme, which included extensive tree plantation drives, reflected his party’s commitment to a greener Pakistan, he added.

President Zardari emphasised to continue to build on these efforts, strengthening the country’s policies to combat climate change, protect its forests, conserve water and promote renewable energy.

The president reaffirmed his commitment to this cause and call upon every citizen, community and institution to play their part. “Together, we can build a resilient and prosperous nation that lives in harmony with nature.

Let us work hand in hand to ensure that Pakistan remains a land of beauty, prosperity and hope,” he said.
