A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday, prompting authorities to issue urgent tsunami warnings and advise residents to stay away from coastal regions. Officials warned that waves reaching up to three metres could hit vulnerable shorelines. Consequently, emergency alerts were quickly broadcast across affected areas to ensure residents moved to safer locations. The sudden tremor triggered widespread caution as disaster response agencies activated emergency procedures.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake originated in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of about 10 kilometres beneath the seabed. Authorities explained that shallow earthquakes often produce stronger ground shaking and greater tsunami risks. Officials identified several northern prefectures likely to experience the largest waves. Therefore, residents in coastal zones were urged to evacuate immediately and avoid beaches or ports until further instructions were issued.

Government officials responded quickly after the tremor, with Sanae Takaichi confirming that authorities had established an emergency task force to coordinate disaster response operations. She urged citizens living in high-risk areas to evacuate calmly and move to designated safe locations. Furthermore, emergency services and local governments were instructed to remain on high alert. The task force will continue monitoring the situation and guide relief efforts if necessary.
Meanwhile, live television coverage showed ships leaving the port of Hachinohe as precautionary measures were taken ahead of potential tsunami waves. Broadcasters displayed urgent evacuation messages across screens to alert viewers about the developing situation. In addition, bullet train services in Aomori Prefecture were temporarily suspended due to the strong tremors. The quake registered an “upper 5” level on the country’s seismic intensity scale, indicating strong shaking capable of making movement difficult for people indoors. Such intensity can also cause unreinforced concrete block walls to collapse and damage older structures.
