Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto is a bright chapter in the history of the subcontinent, who not only introduced a new dimension to the politics of Pakistan but also awakened political consciousness among the people. On the death anniversary of this great leader, we pay tribute to his struggle, sacrifice, and ideology, which, even after his death, remain alive and continue to guide future generations.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was an extraordinary personality. His political journey began with a vision to transform Pakistan into a strong, independent, and people-centric state. Under his leadership, the Pakistan Peoples Party was founded and soon occupied a place in the hearts of the people by giving them the slogan of Roti, Kapra aur Makan. This was more than a slogan-it was a comprehensive socio-economic philosophy aimed at placing the poor and deprived at the centre of the state.
The political career of Shaheed Bhutto was marked by hardship and service to the people. He assumed leadership at a time when the nation was in a severe crisis. Following the tragedy of 1971, Pakistan needed a new direction, and Bhutto rose to the challenge. He brought the country together, restored Pakistan’s international prestige, and provided a solid political and constitutional foundation.
The political career of Shaheed Bhutto was marked by hardship and service to the people.
The greatest accomplishment of Shaheed Bhutto was the Constitution of 1973. To this day, it remains the foundation of the state and a symbol of consensus among all political forces. It strengthened the parliamentary system while ensuring fundamental rights. It was due to Bhutto’s foresight that all parties were brought together to pass a unanimous constitution.
Shaheed Bhutto also laid the foundation for Pakistan’s transformation into a nuclear state. He made it clear that even if the nation had to endure hardship, it would strengthen its defence. The nuclear programme was initiated under his leadership and later became an impregnable pillar of Pakistan’s security. Pakistan is a nuclear power today, and Bhutto’s foresight played a key role in this achievement.
Shaheed Bhutto’s contribution to education is also noteworthy. He expanded the network of educational institutions, established universities and colleges, and worked to make education accessible to the common citizen. He believed that education is the path to development and that only an educated nation can build a strong state.
Shaheed Bhutto defended workers’ rights through the nationalisation of industries, agricultural reforms, and efforts to make the economy people-friendly. His policies aimed to reduce inequality between the rich and the poor and ensure equal opportunities for all citizens.
However, tragically, this great leader was sentenced to death in one of the most controversial cases during a dark period of dictatorship. It remains a painful chapter in Pakistan’s history. Shaheed Bhutto was denied justice, but through his sacrifice, he strengthened the cause of democracy. His martyrdom made him immortal, and he continues to live in the hearts of the people.
Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto carried forward her father’s legacy. She continued his mission and fought bravely against dictatorship. Despite exile and imprisonment, she upheld the banner of democracy. She became the first female Prime Minister of the Muslim world and worked to transform Pakistan into a progressive, moderate, and forward-looking nation.
Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s martyrdom was another great tragedy that plunged the nation into mourning. Following her, President Asif Ali Zardari led the country forward by instilling hope through the slogan of “Pakistan Khappay.” He promoted reconciliation and strengthened the democratic system. Under his leadership, the supremacy of the constitution was reinforced and parliament was strengthened.
Today, President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari continue the vision and ideology of Shaheed Bhutto. They represent a new generation of leadership striving to build a modern, developed, and equal Pakistan. Their politics reflect the same spirit of public service, democracy, and human rights that characterised Shaheed Bhutto.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has emerged as a strong voice in Pakistan and globally. He speaks against extremism, intolerance, and injustice, and advocates for a society where everyone enjoys equal rights.
Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s life teaches us that true politics is about values and service to the masses. He did not bow to pressure or fear and remained a steadfast champion of truth and justice. His struggle, sacrifice, and vision continue to guide us.
We must commit ourselves to preserving his ideology, defending democracy, and playing our part in building a strong, prosperous, and developed Pakistan. This will be the truest tribute to his legacy.
We pay tribute to Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and all pro-democracy leaders who sacrificed their lives for this country. Their mission and sacrifices will never be in vain.
Pakistan Khappay – Long Live Democracy.
