Natural history museum tops UK attractions with record visitors

Published on: May 11, 2026 9:46 PM

London’s Natural History Museum (NHM) has claimed the number one spot among UK attractions, overtaking the British Museum, as revealed in the Association for Leading Visitor Attractions’ (Alva) 2025 annual report.

The museum drew record-breaking crowds with its newly renovated gardens, free entry, and the introduction of the climate gallery, attracting over 7.1 million visitors—a 13% increase compared to the previous year.

Bernard Donoghue, director of Alva, described the museum experience as “fun, joyful, and free,” noting that even during a cost-of-living crisis, day visits remain a top priority for families and tourists.

Other top-ranking sites included the British Museum, Windsor Great Park, Tate Modern, and the National Gallery, highlighting London’s continued appeal as a global cultural and tourist hub.

The NHM’s rise to the top reflects a broader trend, as total visits across Alva’s 409 member sites surged in 2025, although numbers remain slightly below pre-pandemic levels.

With its engaging exhibits, accessible attractions, and enhanced visitor experience, the Natural History Museum has set a benchmark for museums nationwide, blending education, entertainment, and inclusivity to attract diverse audiences.
