Nawazuddin Siddiqui critiques ‘fake films’ dominating bollywood

Published on: March 16, 2026 5:23 PM

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has openly criticised the current state of Hindi cinema, calling out what he described as “fake films” that mislead audiences and stray from truthful storytelling. Speaking at NDTV Creators’ Manch Season 2, Siddiqui questioned whether filmmakers prioritize authenticity or merely construct narratives for commercial appeal.

During the session, the 51-year-old actor expressed concern over films that distort reality, saying audiences today are highly aware and can recognise when stories are manipulated. He emphasised that truth is essential in cinema and that viewers are capable of discerning the intentions behind the content being produced.

Siddiqui remarked, “Fake filmein ban rahi hain… duniya mein kya ho raha hai sab jaantey hain. Asli sachhai kya hai, yeh bhi sab jaantey hain,” highlighting the growing audience awareness of global events and the role of cinema in shaping perceptions.

His comments reignite the debate over Bollywood’s social responsibility versus pure entertainment. Siddiqui suggested that filmmakers should consider the societal impact of their work, guiding audiences responsibly rather than simply producing content for profit or spectacle.

The actor’s observations come at a time when global tensions and cultural narratives influence the industry, prompting questions about whether cinema should serve as a reflection of reality or remain focused on fictional storytelling. Siddiqui believes the audience is sophisticated enough to engage critically with both types of content.

On the professional front, Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently appeared in the Netflix crime thriller Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders and is slated to join the sequel of the acclaimed horror-fantasy film Tumbbad, further showcasing his diverse filmography.
