Punjab Revives Basant in Lahore Under a Safety Focused Governance Framework

Published on: January 24, 2026 1:03 PM

The Government of Punjab has officially announced the revival of Basant in Lahore under #PhirAaiBasant, restoring a long-standing cultural tradition through a structured and safety-focused governance framework.

The revival is rooted in the vision of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz Sharif, reflecting the provincial government’s broader commitment to preserving Punjab’s cultural heritage while addressing public safety concerns associated with past celebrations. The process has been undertaken in coordination with the civic and law enforcement authorities, to ensure institutional oversight and disciplined execution.

Government officials clarified that the return of Basant is being implemented as an official government-led initiative, supported by clearly defined rules and enforcement mechanisms. The objective is to allow citizens to celebrate a historic tradition while ensuring that public safety and civic order are not compromised.

As part of the announced framework, Basant celebrations will be strictly limited to the Lahore district only. Authorities stated that this geographic limitation will allow better coordination, monitoring, and enforcement across the city, enabling safer and more manageable celebrations.

To further strengthen safety measures, the government has directed that only government-approved kites and dor will be permitted during the festivities. The use of unsafe or unauthorized materials will not be allowed, addressing long-standing concerns related to accidents and injuries.

Government Officials emphasized that compliance with safety regulations should be viewed as a shared civic responsibility, urging citizens to actively cooperate with authorities. The government has stressed that responsible participation is essential to ensure Basant can continue to be celebrated in the future.

Citywide preparations in Lahore are expected to reflect the festive spirit associated with Basant, while adherence to safety guidelines ensures that families, children, and communities can participate without risk. The revival represents a balanced approach, one that respects cultural tradition while prioritizing life, order, and public well-being.
