Williams, a former Navy pilot, joined NASA in 1998 and became known for her extensive missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Her most recent assignment, which began in 2024, extended unexpectedly from a planned week to nine months due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.

During this mission, Williams spent 286 days aboard the ISS alongside astronaut Butch Wilmore before returning to Earth in March 2025 via the SpaceX Dragon capsule. Over her career, she accumulated a total of 608 days in space across three missions, making her one of the most experienced astronauts in NASA’s history.

Williams also holds the record for the longest cumulative spacewalk time by a woman, logging 62 hours and 6 minutes, surpassing Peggy Whitson’s previous record of 60 hours and 21 minutes. Her contributions to human spaceflight have included leadership aboard the ISS and advancing commercial space missions to low Earth orbit.

In a statement, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised Williams as a trailblazer, saying, “Williams helped shape the future of exploration through her leadership aboard the space station and by paving the way for commercial missions to low Earth orbit.”
