Karachi plaza blaze partly controlled, rescue continues

Published on: January 18, 2026 1:27 PM

Sindh government officials said firefighters have brought forty percent of the massive blaze at Gul Plaza on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi under control after continuous overnight operations. They confirmed the fire remains dangerous because chemicals, fabric, and plastic materials fueled rapid spread inside the commercial building. Consequently, authorities classified it as a third-degree fire requiring extended emergency response.

Sindh government spokesperson Saadia Javed stated that federal institutions, the Pakistan Navy, and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation are jointly supporting firefighting and rescue efforts. However, she explained that narrow access points and structural damage are slowing firefighters’ entry into the plaza. As a result, rescue operations remain complex and risky.

Officials confirmed that at least five people have died and around twenty others sustained injuries during the incident. Meanwhile, emergency teams continue searching affected areas while prioritizing full extinguishing of flames. Furthermore, three hydrants are supplying water, though Green Line construction on MA Jinnah Road is delaying tanker movement. Therefore, crews are approaching the site from alternative routes.

The spokesperson revealed that only two of seven emergency exits were open when the fire erupted, raising serious safety concerns. She warned that strict action would follow if investigations uncover negligence by owners or authorities. In addition, she urged political groups to avoid exploiting the tragedy for political gains. Instead, she stressed unity during rescue efforts.

Saadia Javed added that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari personally contacted the Sindh chief minister and issued directions regarding the emergency response. She criticized Munam Zafar for politicizing the incident. Ultimately, officials said a detailed inquiry will determine responsibility once operations conclude.
