Carlos Alcaraz will attempt to complete a career Grand Slam at the Australian Open this month, but the rising Spanish star may need to overcome his most formidable contemporary rival, Jannik Sinner, to do so. The 22-year-old has already captured six major titles, yet Melbourne remains the only Slam missing from his résumé after four unsuccessful campaigns.

Alcaraz reached the quarter-finals in both 2024 and 2025, falling to Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic respectively. He has openly acknowledged that triumphing in Australia has become a priority, noting after defending his Roland Garros and US Open titles last year that Melbourne was “the first goal” of his preseason work.
Victory at Melbourne Park would make Alcaraz the youngest man to secure all four majors, eclipsing Rafael Nadal’s achievement at age 24. However, standing in the way is Sinner, the defending two-time champion who is pursuing a historic three-peat. Only Djokovic has won three Australian Opens in succession in the Open era, and he has accomplished the feat twice en route to his 10 titles.
Sinner enters the tournament confident after tallying 58 wins and just six losses in 2025, describing himself as a “better player than last year.” His path to the trophy in recent seasons has included comeback victories over Daniil Medvedev and straight-sets dominance against Zverev.
The rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner—dubbed “Sincaraz”—has defined men’s tennis over the past two seasons. The pair have shared the last eight Grand Slam crowns, with Alcaraz leading their head-to-head 10-6 and edging Sinner for the year-end No. 1 ranking.

Djokovic also returns to Melbourne in pursuit of a record 25th major title, though fitness concerns linger for the 38-year-old after withdrawing from this week’s Adelaide event. With Zverev, Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur and other rising names also in contention, Melbourne’s men’s draw appears poised for a fiercely competitive fortnight.
