Ex-Imran Khan aide Shahzad Akbar reports ‘targeted’ attack on UK residence

Published on: January 2, 2026 12:39 PM

Former special assistant to the prime minister Mirza Shahzad Akbar has said that his residence in the United Kingdom (UK) was subjected to a “deliberate and targeted criminal attack” aimed at causing serious harm, marking the second such incident within a week.

In a post on X on Thursday, Akbar said his home in Cambridgeshire, England, was attacked on December 31, 2025. He alleged that unidentified perpetrators damaged the property and attempted to set it on fire, placing lives at immediate risk.

“This was a deliberate and targeted criminal attack with the intent to cause serious harm,” Akbar said, adding that it followed another incident days earlier in which he was physically assaulted at his home.

The former accountability adviser recalled that on December 24, he was attacked by an unknown assailant who first confirmed his identity before assaulting him. He said he sustained facial injuries, including a fractured nose and bruising. Akbar described the assault as targeted and politically motivated.

According to Akbar, UK authorities are actively investigating both incidents, which he said are being treated as linked and deliberate attacks rather than random crimes. He urged British authorities to ensure the safety of political dissidents and individuals facing persecution.

“The UK has a legal and moral obligation to exhaust all available powers and resources to ensure that it remains a safe country for all,” he said.

Akbar has been living in self-imposed exile in the UK since leaving Pakistan following the removal of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government. He has remained a vocal critic of the current political setup and has repeatedly alleged intimidation and threats.

This is the third such incident Akbar has reported since November 2023, when a masked individual allegedly threw an acidic substance at his residence in Hertfordshire. At the time, Akbar initiated legal proceedings alleging Pakistani state involvement, claims that were categorically rejected by Pakistan’s Foreign Office.

Recently, an Islamabad court declared Akbar a proclaimed offender, while Pakistan has also pursued his extradition. Last month, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi handed over extradition documents to UK High Commissioner Jane Marriott during a meeting in Islamabad.
