China pulls back after Taiwan drills

Published on: December 31, 2025 5:44 PM

China has withdrawn its warships from waters surrounding Taiwan following massive military drills designed to project power, signal resolve, and warn both separatist forces and external actors. The exercises, named Justice Mission 2025, involved intense live fire activities across key maritime zones. Chinese forces practiced encirclement tactics meant to simulate blockades of strategic sea lanes and major ports. Meanwhile, Taiwanese security agencies tracked developments closely as regional tensions remained elevated.

The drills brought together all major branches of the Chinese military, including the navy, air force, army, and rocket force, highlighting joint operational readiness. According to intelligence assessments, Beijing is accelerating preparations aligned with long-term strategic goals. These include contingency planning that envisions potential control over Taiwan within the coming years. As a result, the scale and coordination of the exercises drew serious international attention.

Following the conclusion of the drills on Wednesday, Chinese naval vessels gradually moved away from the island’s surrounding seas, easing immediate military pressure. Taiwanese officials confirmed a visible reduction in Chinese maritime activity. However, authorities stressed that the situation required continued vigilance. Therefore, Taiwan’s armed forces remained on high alert while monitoring movements from an emergency response center.

Taiwan’s government strongly condemned the exercises, calling them a direct threat to regional security and an act of deliberate provocation. Officials argued that such actions undermine stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Kuan Bi-ling, head of Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council, said maritime conditions had calmed as vessels departed. Nevertheless, officials emphasized that Taiwan would continue strengthening defensive preparedness.

The developments come shortly after Taiwan finalized an eleven billion dollar arms agreement with the United States, a move that further strained cross-strait relations. China maintains that Taiwan is part of its sovereign territory under the One China policy. While Beijing continues to propose peaceful reunification, Taiwan rejects these offers. Instead, the island has pledged to safeguard its democratic system and freedoms against coercion.
