James Cameron clarifies future plans for Avatar franchise

Published on: December 27, 2025 2:38 PM

James Cameron has made an important announcement regarding the future of his globally successful Avatar film series, addressing speculation about whether the franchise will continue beyond its upcoming instalments.

The filmmaker, who recently released Avatar: Fire and Ash, dismissed earlier reports suggesting he might abandon the series if the third sequel failed to meet box office expectations. The film has performed strongly since its release and is already nearly halfway to the $1 billion mark worldwide within its first week in cinemas, reinforcing confidence in the franchise’s commercial appeal.

James Cameron says he’ll hold a press conference to reveal the ending of the ‘AVATAR’ franchise if the 4th & 5th films don’t happen

“I’ll tell you what we were gonna do. How’s that?”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cameron shared candid remarks about the long-term future of the saga, particularly Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, which are already in development. He explained that while he hopes to complete the full story he has envisioned, each instalment must justify itself commercially.

“I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does. But, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out,” Cameron said, highlighting the balance between creative ambition and financial realities in large-scale filmmaking.

The director added that if circumstances ever prevent him from completing the planned sequels, he would address fans directly and transparently. “If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do,” he said, assuring audiences that the story would not be left without explanation.

Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the visually rich and emotionally driven narrative set on Pandora and features a star-studded cast including Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Kate Winslet and Sigourney Weaver.
