Massive rock structure found beneath Bermuda Triangle

Published on: December 16, 2025 3:25 PM

A massive, never-before-seen rock structure found beneath Bermuda is rewriting Earth's geological story

A massive rock formation has been discovered beneath the ocean crust below Bermuda, deepening the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. Measuring 12.4 miles across, the structure is unlike anything previously observed on Earth, according to the research team behind the finding.

Scientists say the discovery could help shed light on one of the world’s most puzzling geological mysteries. Bermuda lies on an “oceanic swell,” a raised section of the ocean crust often associated with volcanic activity, yet there is no evidence of volcanic eruptions in the area for the past 31 million years.

The real secret of the Bermuda Triangle hides deep underground. Scientists just found a huge layer of ancient volcanic rock under Bermuda’s oceanic crust. This layer is 12.4 miles (20 km)… pic.twitter.com/izeRxIRdvf

The discovery was made while researchers studied seismic waves in the region. They noticed that the waves changed course near Bermuda, revealing the presence of the unusually thick rock formation beneath the seabed.

Experts are now investigating other nearby islands to determine whether similar structures exist elsewhere in the Atlantic. Dr. William Frazer, a seismologist at Carnegie Science, said understanding extreme formations like this can provide insight into both normal and extreme geological processes on Earth.

The Bermuda Triangle has long been notorious for unexplained ship and aircraft disappearances. While the newly discovered structure does not directly explain these phenomena, scientists hope it will contribute to a better understanding of the region’s unique geology.
