Disney is once again revisiting its animated classics, this time shifting focus from heroes to villains. The studio is developing a live-action spinoff film centered on Gaston, the iconic antagonist from Beauty and the Beast.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the project is expected to offer a fresh take on the familiar character. The film aims to reimagine Gaston’s story from a new perspective, expanding Disney’s lineup of live-action adaptations.
According to industry reports, the screenplay will be written by David Callaham, a filmmaker with major credits to his name. His previous work includes Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

The project will not bring back Luke Evans, who portrayed Gaston in Disney’s 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens. Sources indicate the studio is seeking a complete reboot of the character.
Deadline reported that Disney wants a “fresh start,” which means the role of Gaston will be recast. This decision suggests the film will stand independently rather than serving as a direct continuation of the earlier remake.
This is not the first time Disney has explored the idea of giving Gaston a larger spotlight. In the past, the studio considered a live-action spinoff series featuring Luke Evans and Josh Gad reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou.
That earlier project, titled The Little Town, was announced several years ago but never progressed beyond development. It was ultimately shelved without moving into production.

With renewed interest in villain-driven stories, Disney appears ready to revisit the concept in a new format. The Gaston spinoff reflects a broader trend of exploring complex antagonists within established franchises.
