According to the creators, each season will travel further back in time. The first season was set in 1962, the second is expected to explore 1935, and the third will take viewers to Derry in 1908. Andy Muschietti explained that the series’ overarching story is tied to the three critical cycles of Pennywise.

“Our big story arc involves three seasons, mainly based on the three critical cycles of Pennywise, which are 1962, 1935, and 1908,” he said. The directors have closely studied Stephen King’s original books to craft the show’s narrative, focusing on interludes and subtle hints left by the author.

Andy further told Variety, “I went into the book and looked at the interludes. I realized there was a hidden story there, and that Stephen King was leaving crumbs that could guide us somewhere. It’s a story told backwards.” By delving further into the past, the series aims to uncover more of the origin story of Bob Gray, the entity behind Pennywise.

Meanwhile, Bill Skarsgard, who portrays Pennywise, has received widespread acclaim from fans for his chilling performance. Many viewers have suggested that his portrayal deserves recognition for a Best Horror Performance award, highlighting his ability to bring the terrifying clown to life.
