
Pennywise, the terrifying clown from the It franchise, becomes even more brutal in HBO’s latest series IT: Welcome to Derry, as co-creator Andy Muschietti reveals the reasoning behind the heightened menace.
Muschietti explained that the increased violence was intentional, saying, “I really wanted to raise the volume… to do something slightly different from what I did before in the movies,” to give audiences a fresh experience.

He added that the series also amplifies other elements like emotions and fun, creating a more intense viewing experience while staying true to the tone of the original It films.
“Even though the style and tone of the movies continue, the volume is a little higher in terms of intensity, both in horror and emotions,” Muschietti said, emphasizing the show’s heightened impact.

Welcome to Derry serves as a prequel to the previous films, delving into Pennywise’s origins and exploring the darker, more brutal facets of the sinister clown, captivating both new viewers and franchise fans.
The series has quickly become a hit for HBO, attracting over 5.5 million viewers within its first three days, making it HBO Max’s third most-watched debut. Episode four is scheduled to release on November 16.
