Duchess of Gloucester offers comfort at Christmas charity service

LONDON: The Duchess of Gloucester took on a heartfelt role for the royal family by attending a poignant reunion and charity event this week. Birgitte, 79, who is married to Queen Elizabeth II’s first cousin Prince Richard, was assigned by Buckingham Palace to support families and bring hope during the festive season. The royal is a long-standing patron of the charity Missing People.

On Monday, the Duchess attended the Evening of Hope and Remembrance Service at St Mary Abbots Parish Church in London. Titled “A Light in the Dark,” the service focused on families who are missing loved ones during Christmas. Birgitte arrived alone, a reflection of her commitment to personally offer comfort and solace to those enduring difficult times.

The Duchess has a reputation for taking on sensitive engagements independently, allowing her to connect more closely with those she seeks to support. Her presence at the service came just two days after attending Kate Middleton’s Together at Christmas Carol concert on Friday. These events highlight her dedication to balancing ceremonial duties with compassionate outreach.

As a senior member of the royal family, the Duchess of Gloucester continues to work through the holiday season. She is expected to maintain her royal engagements until Christmas Day, after which she will join the family reunion at Sandringham.
