ISLAMABAD: The final supermoon of 2025, known as the Cold Moon, is set to illuminate skies across Pakistan tonight and tomorrow night, according to Radio Pakistan. Suparco, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, confirmed that this event marks the third consecutive supermoon of the year.

A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, appearing unusually large and bright — up to 14 per cent bigger and nearly 30 per cent brighter than a regular full moon. The Cold Moon is named for its proximity to the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
“This natural spectacle can be easily observed with the naked eye, provided the skies remain clear,” Suparco said, encouraging astronomy enthusiasts, students, and families to watch the event. No special equipment is required to enjoy the moon’s enhanced glow.

On the evening of December 4, 2025, the year’s final full Moon will rise shortly after sunset, appearing noticeably larger and more brilliant than usual. This is the last supermoon of 2025: at its closest approach to Earth (perigee), it will look up… pic.twitter.com/ktBaGuJoqb

Earlier this year, the first supermoon appeared on October 7, followed by the Beaver Supermoon on November 5, which was described by Suparco as “the closest, biggest, and brightest full moon of 2025.” In September, stargazers in Karachi missed a rare blood moon, a total lunar eclipse, due to heavy cloud cover.
Astronomers note that supermoons offer a unique opportunity for photography, educational observation, and public interest in astronomy. Experts say the phenomenon can also influence tides slightly, though its effect on everyday life remains minimal.
